OutSailing is an initiative designed to build confidence and provide new social and networking opportunities for vulnerable lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) young people through sailing.
It was founded by members of the Sailing and Cruising Association (S&CA) who recognise that sailing is a wonderful way of building self-confidence, learning new skills, enjoying being part of a team and simply having fun out on the water. OutSailing is designed to extend this opportunity to vulnerable LGBTQ young people.
Originally run as a section of the S&CA, OutSailing has since become a separate organisation in order to benefit from schemes such as Gift Aid. The Trustees are all members of the S&CA and at present almost all of the fundraising comes from generous members who support the scheme.
OutSailing, in collaboration with various LGBTQ Youth Groups, and RYA accredited sailing schools, offer young people the opportunity to experience a weekend’s sailing in venues around the country. Qualified instructors introduce the challenge and thrills of sailing, enabling the young people to get to grips with working together as a close-knit team.
